Asthma Facts

Asthma, essentially, is a condition where the sufferer has difficulty breathing. The word asthma is derived from the Greek word meaning panting or breathing hard. Wheezing and shortness of breath are the most obvious symptoms during an attack.

The most commonly seen type of asthma is bronchial asthma. It is caused by a narrowing of the passages that carry air from the throat to the lungs - which can be due to muscle contraction, local inflammation or the production of excess mucus. Whatever the reason, the result is the same: difficulty breathing. Wheezing is frequently heard as the asthmatic breathes out.
The recommendations in Dr Rons book are aimed at sufferers of bronchial asthma of all kinds.

One in four children diagnosed with asthma - this is a shocking statistic - asthma is NOT an inconvenience. It is a potentially lethal condition that has no cure, only medication to lessen the severity and number of attacks. There are thousands of deaths annually as a direct or indirect result of asthma - many of them preventable.

Another, less common, type of asthma is called cardiac asthma, which is a symptom of heart disease - the heart is not pumping the blood around the body strongly enough to deliver sufficient oxygen to the muscles. The body responds by trying to increase the uptake of oxygen by bringing more air into the lungs, a feeling of breathlessness then occurs. Cardiac asthma should only be treated by medical practitioners.

Dr Rons' book is an attempt to give the reader as much information as possible: about asthma itself, the exercises Ron has found most helpful over decades of working with people with asthma, and natural therapies and treatments for it that are presently available. It is our hope that asthmatics will thus better understand what may be causing it in their lives, and may pursue avenues of treatment that will improve their health.
